"The Cheltenham Friends began meeting at Richard Wall's house in 1683. This meeting grew rapidly and on April 5, 1697, John Barnes made a donation of 120 acres of land 'for and towards the erection of a Meeting House for Friends and towards the maintenance of a school.' The minutes of the Society of Friends show that on April 29, 1702, the Monthly Meeting is directed to be held in Abington. The original building was started in 1699. Additions were made in 1786 and 1797. Important repairs were made in 1849 and the John Barnes' room was erected in 1929." - Alexander Scott

"This is the oldest known picture of the school. It was taken in 1869 when classes were held in what is now the caretaker's home. Top-hatted gentleman at the left was the headmaster." - Alexander Scott

"In 1768 he built a log cabin on Mermaid Lane (Willow Grove Ave.) between Glenside Avenue and Limekiln Pike. He built this house adjoining the cabin in 1770. In 1870 William Rhoads purchased the Bradfield land and tore down the cabin. In 1975 the house was still owned by descendants of William Rhoads and is one of the oldest houses in the Glenside area." - Alexander Scott

"It sat on the site of Jay Cooke's 'Ogontz.' The property was a wedding gift to Eleanor Widener and Fitz Eugene Dixon. Her father and brother were drowned on the Titanic in 1912 on their way back with her wedding trousseau. In 1923 the house was completed by the architect Horace Trumbauer. It was a reproduction of 'Compton Wynyates' in Warwickshire, England, a few miles north of Stratford-on-Avon. It was called Ronaele Manor which was derived from spelling Eleanor backwards. In 1950 the Brothers of the Christian Schools purchased the estate as a house for student Brothers of the Baltimore Province. The mansion and some 46 acres plus several smaller buildings was purchased for $275,000. This was a low price considering the value of the mansion alone was $975,000. The mansion was renamed Anselm Hall after Brother Edwin Anselm former President of LaSalle College. In 1974 it was demolished after being sold to a developer." - Alexander Scott

"The Ashbourne School, on Union Avenue, was built in 1881. In November 1884 the principal, Mr. Flounders, presented the idea of a high school. This led to the beginning of high school education in Cheltenham Township and Mr. Flounders was the first principal of Cheltenham High School. Name and date stone." - Alexander Scott
